Indian Institute of Technology: IIT Bombay

As Mumbai is the financial capital of India students aim to study here as they can get best placements in the city. The standard of living in Mumbai is one of the best in India and settling down in the city of dreams is exactly anyone would want to do. Known for its large scale student festivals, IIT, Bombay is truly a cosmopolitan institute where students from all over India and even abroad come to study.
History of IIT Bombay
With the help of Soviet Union and the UNESCO, the institute was established years back with the motive of encouraging technical and scientific studies. The very first batch was taken in the Synthetic and Art Silk Mills Research Association (SASMIRA) as their temporary location. In the first year of its establishments more than 3400 students applied to study in this institute and only 100 were selected. Since then the college has been evolving with more and more students applying to study here to get one of the best technical know-how in the country. Today the institute’s enormous campus is located in Powai where years back Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru laid its foundation.
Organisational Functioning of IIT Bombay
A body called the ‘Board of Governors’ runs IIT-B. For all the academic affairs, the ‘Senate’, nominated by the Council is responsible and accountable. The Senate is made up of a few selected professors. The chairman elected by the Board of Governors is called the ‘Director’ of the institute. Beside this, the government of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat elect one technologist or industrialist to be a part of the authority. The director, deputy director and the dean is the authority to the functioning of the institute. The ‘Registrar’ is the authority to the administration department.
IIT Bombay Campus
IIT, Bombay campus stretches over 550 acres of land near Powai lake. Its green, lush and beautiful environment, sans pollution is in close proximity to the nationally famous Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Students find the campus fresh and clean and feel connected to nature, away from bustling city roads. There are in total four entrances to the campus. Just like other IIT Campuses, it has various department, activity and hostel buildings. The ‘Infinite Corridor’ connects all departments to each other.
Facilities for Students and other activities at Mumbai IIT
In total there are 13 hostel buildings out of which Hostel 11 building is reserved specially for girls studying post graduate programs. Here too, like IIT, Delhi (refer to the article IIT, Delhi for more details) there are separate boarding facility for married students.
For cultural and extra curricular activities, a Students’ Activity Centre (SAC) is available. They can also play various games like: football, volleyball, hockey, cricket, basketball, table tennis, lawn tennis and even squash in their separate courts, grounds and fields. Two schools are also running in the IIT, Bombay campus called the IIT Campus School and the renowned Kendriya Vidyalaya. Apart from project works, studies and assignments students actively participate in activities like: dramatics, music and dance programs, sports, exhibitions, competitions and quizzes. The annual students’ festivals are long awaited by not only its students but by other colleges too as they make big news. Due to the film industry situated in the city itself, celebrity appearances are often witnessed by one and all.

IIT Bombay Alumni Associations
IIT, Bombay has an official alumni association, which maintains the alumni network and keeps the entire alumnus in loop. This association is called IIT Bombay Alumni Association or the IITBAA. The association has been formed with all legal formalities and is registered under Section 25 of the Indian Companies Act, 1956. The alumni have also formed a body which works towards the funding and promotion of education in this institute. This organisation is called the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund or the IITBFH. It is also registered under the US Internal Revenue Code Section 501( c) (3).
